5. LIV –MIAMI, USA

Imagine if you combined all the clubs above in
to one and then added 100 lbs of posh on top. It’s the super model of all clubs. It’s the only VIP club that can instantly morph into a gritty and dirty underground club. It’s totally up to the DJ where you want to take the crowd. It’s like you have a Porsche Panamera at your disposal; it can be a head-turner luxury saloon in true South-Beach style in one minute, and it can become the baddest beast on the road racing passed you like a high end sports car – you the driver can make the choice and LIV the club will deliver it in an instant. But you better be a good driver because at speeds that high with one wrong move you might crash and burn.

4. DISTRICT 36 – NY, USA

I’ve only done two shows at this new club and I can tell you that I have found my new home in NYC. Great DJ booth set up, proper sound system, and a dark dance floor – which is how I like it. They have the perfect balance of gritty dancefloor space and VIP where both type of the main focus is the DJ and the music.

3. AVALON – LA, USA

Probably one of the last super clubs in the US, especially on the West Coast. Just like Warung and Beta, they provide a playground for all kinds of DJs to do their thing with a varied crowd from night to night. It’s one of the last places in the US that I get to play a long set with total freedom and take people on a musical ride in full control. LA in general has a very educated crowd and I believe the roots of it is veteran promoters like Dave Dean and Kobe working so closely with Avalon over the years to bring the best the world has to offer – again with a balance of business vs. creating a playground to educate the crowd by bringing diverse acts. I’ve had some of my best experiences as a DJ at Avalon playing until 8-9 in the morning with the crowd still in tow. That’s a hard feat anywhere in the world, especially in America. They are another club that are constantly looking to evolve.

2. BETA – DENVER, US

Some clubs get it and some don’t. I happened to do the grand opening for Beta a few years back and they still had a lot of kinks to work out on the opening as most new clubs do, but w hat set them apart was their instant dedication to wanting to know what DJs liked and didn’t like about their new club and actually listening to them and making those changes. Beta stands as one of the clubs in the world that I really look forward to playing at. Fantastic sound system, properly placed DJ booth and a dancefloor suited to interacting with the crowd, and most importantly, an educated crowd. Cities/clubs don’t end up having educated crowds on their own. There is usually a catalyst and in Denver, it’s Beta and the team behind it. They understand the balance of wanting to have a financially successful club and making sure they continually bring all kinds of acts from different corners of dance music for the betterment and growth of electronic music.

1. WARUNG – ITAJAÍ, BRAZIL

People often ask, what is your favorite club/the best place to play? My answer is always the same; any place with a great sound system, capable promoters, a proper setup for the DJ, and an engaged crowd. If there is one club that gets it right 100% of the time, it’s Warung in Brazil. Factor in the location of the club, set amidst a huge beachfront nature preserve and it’s patrons, who happen to be amongst the world’s most beautiful and enthusiastic, and you end up with a clubbing utopia for DJs and fans, the likes of which are rare. I would be surprised if it weren’t the first choice for countless other DJs who’ve had the pleasure of playing there. Playing at Warung makes me want to experiment with music and be the best DJ that I can be. The connection with the crowd along with the feeling you get after playing a ten-hour set is pure perfection and the crowd always makes you feel like the feeling is mutual.

Having been in the game for the best part of two decades, it’s fair to say that Tehran-born DJ and producer Sharam knows how to make a crowd go nuts. Legendary late-night sets aside, he’s worked with some of the biggest names in music, topped countless polls in the house music press and, as one half of duo Deep Dish, even picked up a Grammy award back in 2002. Ahead of his hotly anticipated appearance at Allure, we fired some questions his way…

So, are you looking forward to coming back to Abu Dhabi?
I was at Creamfields last year. It was cool, but, unfortunately, it rained, which sort of threw people off. I’m looking forward to coming down to a more intimate venue and really experiencing Abu Dhabi.

Yeah, when I come to the Middle East, I tend to attract a lot of Iranians, who usually aren’t able to see me perform, so they make the trip over. So there’s more excitement because you have your countrymen rooting for you. Hopefully I can play in Iran one day, but for now playing in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is the closest I can get to a home gig.

You’ve been solo for five years now. Is that just temporary?
I’m the type of person who gets bored really easily. [Ali Shirazinia and I] achieved a lot of things that many people can only dream of as Deep Dish. We wanted to take a break and experiment. We’re both individual DJs and producers, so we were just happy to work together for a while as a duo.

Is there anyone you’re aching to work with?
Someone who’s been at the top of my list for a long time is Björk. Working with her would be incredible.

Thinking of asking her?
If the opportunity presents itself, then I’ll approach it and explore it. I’m not really the type to cold call people!

Ever been star-struck during a show?
I did an Oscars party a couple of years back, and before the show I was hanging out in this room and all of a sudden I see Al Pacino and Adrien Brody right next to me! And it’s just the three of us. I thought, ‘I’ve got to say something or I’m gonna look goofy,’ but then I thought if I do say something they’re gonna be like, ‘Okay, who’s this dweeb?’ We just exchanged small talk for a bit, but I was properly star-struck.

At least you weren’t next to each other in the bathroom…
Well when you’re in a bathroom small talk tends to come more naturally, you let off whatever rubbish is on your mind. But in that particular case I was like, ‘Okay, I know who you guys are, but I know you have no idea who I am!’

What do you think makes a great clubbing venue?
The first and foremost important thing is the sound system. If it’s not right you might as well just pack it all up. It makes the experience that much better or that much worse. Along with the lighting and the vibe you create with that. As long as you’ve got those two elements and there’s a capable promoter doing their job, you’ve got a great party.

Do you have any vices to help the creative process along?
Tea. I’m an avid tea drinker. When I’m in the studio I’ve got to have my tea. Anything from the standard English breakfast, to Earl Grey, lapsang souchong. I also buy different teas and make my own medley. I take it on the road with me too – I have a bag of tea with me at all times.

Any other un-DJ like tendencies that people might not expect of you?
My biggest hobby is tracking box office figures and movie sales. I’ve done this ever since I was a young kid. I have to check the box office numbers of US and worldwide releases every week, I’m addicted to it. I’m not sure why, it’s just something I’ve always done.

Before Sharam plays at Hollywood hot spot Avalon tomorrow night, he chatted with Avalon on Twitter.  Sharam talks about his favorite post-gig foods, his strangest gig, music, sports, cars and what he’s currently obsessed with. Check out the full interview below.

Avalon: Hey guys tonight we have Sharam for a live interview. He’s playing Avalon this Saturday. Sharam, how are you this chilly night?

Sharam: All good. Eating, driving, and tweeting…

Avalon: You’re quite the multi-tasker. OK, so first question. If you could open up for anyone (dead, alive, & any genre of music) who would it be and why?

Sharam: I’d like to have opened for the Rat Pack. Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr. Those guys seemed to have such a blast at every show, and do their thing just like friends hanging out. And I love that music so much. As a DJ, I can sort of relate to those guys, grinding it out every night. And now we’re sort of doing that in Vegas.

Avalon: Yea definitely, you guys practically live in airports… I’d be too exhausted. So what’s your guiltiest post gig meal?

Sharam: That depends on the hotel. Whatever that’s on the room service menu. Sometimes you don’t get to choose the food. The food chooses you! But when I’m in Vegas for a pool party I always hit Craft Steakhouse for the after meal! Best steakhouse in the world! But a lot of times, tons of water and an advil will do the trick!

Avalon: Yea true, sometimes the only option is a street dog. So which gig has been the strangest gig? Why?

Sharam: I recently played in Puerto Rico after a reggaeton band. Talk about a tough & strange experience. Even if I had done backflips while DJing it wasn’t gonna work.

Avalon: You’d be like the Jonas Brothers, but instead DJing & acrobatics! So are you obsessed with anything right now?

Sharam: What am I obsessed with? Hmm… Football (the American kind). Its a great game to enjoy watching/following. It’s like a chess match. So many variables and things change so much during the course of a game. Also I’m interested in the business operation & management of the teams. There’s so much to learn from. Generally speaking I’m really into & follow things that I can learn from and apply to my life/work, etc. I have to say, I’m also into watches & cars. Not a big collector, but I have an appetite for cool watches and cool cars.

Avalon: Since you’re a major car enthusiast, what is your all time favorite car?

Sharam: The car I’m dying to have is Lamborghini Miura! Man, I get goosbumps just looking at the picture. I saw one recently at a local car show. Unreal! I also have my eye on an BWM 3.0 SC from early 70′s. That car has so much attitude in her look! It’s known for starting the Shark look on beamers.

Avalon: That’s definitely an obsession. So what’s your best drunken story?

Sharam: Best drunken story? Just come to WMC to see that one live. In fact, you’ll see a lot of those stories with all DJs in town partying it up. Also sometimes the stories make it out in my tweetss. So those who follow me already know about a bunch of them I guess!

Avalon: Drunk tweeting. That’s always embarassing the next morning.

Sharam: Just got a reminder of a story [when] we rode bikes at the Weekend Dance festival (BCN) in the middle of the crowd, while Sven Vath was drawing pictures. That was hazy & crazy!

Avalon: I wish I couldve seen that! So if you were stuck on a deserted island with no cell reception/internet, what’s one thing you’d want to have?

Sharam: Flashlight & Matches. I’d imgine it’d be hella scary at night on a deserted island.

Avalon: Definitely, never thought about that. You tweeted on whether or not to shave the beard or have a mustache. Decision?

Sharam: Beard Vs. Stache? Still contemplating that one. I might surprise people with that one. I’ve always wanted to have a pan handle 70′s style mustache. As you can see anything from the 70′s gets me going. I love that decade. Best cars, best ‘staches, best music…

Avalon: Thanks for talking to us while driving & eating! Hope your phone didn’t get too dirty.

Sharam: Looking forward to dropping some of my new tunes this Saturday at Avalon. It’s always an amazing experience playing in there!

An international icon came home Saturday. Sharam, DC local and one half of trailblazing duo Deep Dish,delivered a truly epic set over the weekend at Fur Nightclub.

Saturday night also marked the launch of Mnmlife Saturdays on the Patio at Fur. Starting things off this week were Mnmlife residents Sanath and Jubilee. Adding more EDM to Fur has been a long time coming. Now when you go outside to smoke cigarettes your ears will be blessed with the minimalist sounds of techno at its finest.

With family and friends in the building, Sharam couldn’t help but wear an ear-to-ear grin from the moment he took the reigns until well after he had finished. Bringing an underground vibe with big room flavor, he dropped bomb after bomb of choice house selections, providing an atmospheric ambience spread over thumping, tribal drums. The way he spun in terms of track selection and set progression was truly astonishing. He knows how to advance the mood of an evening better than most.

Along with unbelievable music, Sharam brought with him a visual showcase that greatly enhanced the experience. Streaming across Fur’s massive projection screens and HDTVs was a graphic display depicting everything from formula 1 racing(to promote his new Mach 1 EP) and his ‘Get Wild’ outlaw antics, to the World Cup logo and NBA finals graphics showing love to the Lakers and Celtics.

The World Cup graphics were of course displayed as he dropped his monstrously epic remix of Shakira’s official World Cup anthem ‘Waka Waka.’ If one song could be chosen to define the phrase ‘brought the house down’ it would be that. Sharam’s drums and uplifting tribal chanting combined with Shakira’s poignant lyrics had the entire club going wild.

It really was his day and he really did pave the way. Other highlights of the evening included Deep Dish vs. Tears for Fears – Flash, Dance, Shout (Eddie Thoneick Bootleg), Sharam – Fun (unreleased) and a 1994 house tune we think is entitled ‘Psychofunk.’ His ability to spin a 16 y/o track and while maintaining relevance to today’s style of house was simply mind-boggling.

It’s safe to say no one has ever dug deeper for Glow. In fact, we’d venture as far as saying we finally realize the relevance of naming our basketball team The Wizards. The Wizards of HOUSE. Sharam brought the magic back to DC Clubbing.

Of course Celtics went on to beat the #1 seed, Cavaliers with ‘King’ LeBron James, and last night they beat the #2 seed Orlando Magic with ‘Superman’ Dwight Howard, to clinch their second appearance in the NBA Finals in 3 years! Bottom line is, it don’t matter if you are Superman or King, Celtics are for real and they are here to win the whole thing.

Of course we are now waiting for the winner of Phoenix Suns/Los Angeles Lakers series but as you will see in this video, nothing would top it for me more if Lakers made it to the finals to re-live the glorious Celtics-Lakers days from the 80′s with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. We now have Rajon Rondo, Paul ‘The Truth’ Pierce , KG and Ray Allen vs. Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and rest of the LA clan.

As i was leaving the area, everyone kept yelling Burnout! Burnout! Even one of the cops was cool with the idea when i joking told him that i was gonna do it. So i said what the hell, might as well leave with a bang, and boy was it a bang! After peeling off, i immediately got bombarded with half of the cops in Time Square! I had at least 10 cops on me and the first thing they asked me (after screaming and yelling while running after me) was to pop the trunk open? I’m like, what the hell do they want with the trunk? Of course a 40 year old car doesn’t have a pop-up trunk, which aggravated the cops even further.

Anyway, long story short, Burnouts are apparently illegal which is why they pulled me over, but what they really were concerned with was the ‘suspicious activity in a suspicious car with a suspicious looking dude’. Yup they were looking for explosives and given that my look screams terrorist, they thought they nailed it! The fact that earlier in the day there was a fake bomb threat and of course the previous week some jack-ass Pakistani tried to blow up Time Square didn’t help matters here. They see me, in a perfect cover-up car, peeling out in Time Square? Voila! there you have it. I’m a prime suspect. I don’t blame them for freaking out, but boy are these guys rude and out of touch with reality. They ended up giving me 3 absurd tickets (filled with sarcastic remarks in between) because they really had nothing on me. Tickets as absurd as not having the car name printed on my insurance card? Come on guys!

The highlight, however, were these two bums that came in while the cops were doing their thing and started ranting and raving about the car amongst other things. We have them on film, so stay tuned for the clip, It’s a classic!

After all the additional drama, i head back to the hotel for a quick shower and onto catching up with the other Gumballers at The Box where they were giving out awards and a last hurrah for the participants. Of course, we got there late too, so i wasn’t there when they called my name, but it was good to see everyone together and hobnob for a bit. In the house were Xzibit, Eve, Idris ‘Stringer Bell’ Elba, DJ_Muggs, etc. Chatted a bit with Idris about music and cars. He’s also a DJ and a huge house music fan, but, unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) i had to bust out after one drink as i was due to DJ at Quo.

Having said that I could get the car to 100 miles plus where the true power of the 426 Hemi engine comes to fruition… but only for a few minutes/miles as we didn’t want to blow up the engine… at one point I was proud to see my Bee torque on with Amro’s (the Saudi prince who goes by Prince Gumball) Stainless Steel Lamborghini from 70 to 110 Miles. John, who was my muscle car guardian angel, gave me a dirty look and I pulled her back to 70 MPH. Not that i could keep up with the silver Lambo for longer anyway… but at 495 HP plus.. who knows… ;o)
